Chess - PAWN will die first?

The lowly pawn,
Goes on and on.
Cautiously forward,
yet steadily onward.

Step by step,
in her elegant style.
The pawn is aware
Of hazard there,
but never will retreat.

She may, some day,
weave through all the way,
And in fair play
Rise up and say,
"The Pawn becomes a Queen!"
